Using Online Tools
to Facilitate Class Discussion
Summary:  The presenter will demonstrate and discuss using BlackBoard 6.0 communication tools to improve class discussion in both online and traditional classroom settings.

Abstract:  This presentation will provide college instructors with basic tips of how to enhance classroom discussion through the use of online communication tools, forum and chatroom.  While BlackBoard 6.0 is a specific platform to be demonstrated, WebCT communication tools are similar and information can be easily transferred.

Extensive research proves that learning retention is improved when students participate in the learning process.  One of the ways to stimulate student participation is class discussion.  However, it is often difficult and time-consuming to draw college students, especially non-traditional students, out of the silence conditioned by many years of one-sided lecture courses.  In addition, students may be constricted by time limits of the course and unable to participate.

Online communication tools such as Discussion Board (forum) and Virtual Classroom (chatroom) allow students to relax in front of their own computers and contribute to the classroom discussion.  Discussion Board is an example of asynchronous communication environment.  It means that students can post and check messages at any time, thus more flexible.  Virtual Classroom is an example of synchronous environment where students must be present on-line at a certain time in order to communicate with other participants.

It is recommended to begin the course by introducing students to the Discussion Board which will allow all students to participate whenever they choose.  Once students are comfortable, Virtual Classroom discussion may be scheduled as well.  Discussion Board is useful for general discussion questions as well as information exchange.  Virtual Classroom is great for on-line courses because it allows instructors to present a variety of materials.  In addition, this tool may be used for collaborative projects if students would like to communicate on-line; in this case, individual chat rooms can be set up for each group.
